1886-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. A minuscule hint of toning is evident on the otherwise satiny white surfaces. The common O-mint dates of 1883-O to 1885-O quickly gave way to this very scarce and elusive 1886-O issue. For some reason now unexplained, very few rolls were saved this year. Collectors need to work hard to find an acceptable BU specimen (PCGS # 7168) .

1886-S over S. Top 100. Vam-2. NGC graded MS-63 Deep Mirror Prooflike. A touch of natural violet tone surrounds the borders. A brilliant, lustrous, and '86-S. Nothing intermittent about the prooflike fields, everyone can see this coin flashing in the distance. It's gleam is like an effervescent silvery moonbeam that has burst suddenly into view, with delicate contrast from the frosty devices. Pop 2; none better.

Lot 1318
1889-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned. A popular key date, one of only 350,000 minted. Silver dollar issuance terminated in 1885 but began again in 1889 at the Carson City office creating a three-year hiatus when there were no CC dollars made. Some point to a few irregularities that had popped up which caused the Treasury Department to close the Mint while an inquiry was made. Others to the installation of a Democratic administration overseen by Grover Cleveland whose budget-cutting included the Carson mint. In 1885, Cleveland entered office. In 1885, the Democrat-led administration cut funding to the Carson Mint. In 1889, Cleveland left office. In 1889, a Republican administration returned to power. In 1889, the Mint received new funding. Coincidence? Upon reopening, there was only time to strike 350,000 silver dollars before the next calendar year began, as mentioned above. Hence, this date's infrequent appearance at auction, especially in Mint State condition.

The '89-CC is always included among the top five key dates in the series in Mint condition. It is the undisputed leader among Uncirculated Carson City Morgan dollars. This attractive MS61 coin is nicely brilliant, without toning, and has a characteristic slightly reflective sheen in the fields. The strike full on the obverse while the breast feathers of the eagle are sharp, both encouragements for a collector looking to bid. The obverse has a few wispy, well scattered hairlines and marks in the field but nothing out of the ordinary, with almost no disturbance on the reverse (PCGS # 7190) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

1892 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. A brilliant untoned example and an excellent candidate for a Cameo designation. A total of 1245 Proofs struck. Something perhaps worth adding to the smooth finish is how desirable this coin is with this precision strike on the hair and caps, the eagle's breast and wing feathers. This is why the more experienced collectors often turn to buying Proofs. Their beauty and sharp detail earn them a lot of attention and praise. Pop 80, 70 finer (PCGS # 7327) .

1892-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC approved. Quite frosty and primarily toned. There are several CC-mint Morgan Dollars (such as the 1882-1884 issues) which are easily obtainable in Gem MS65 grade. The 1892-CC is not. This isn't to say average Mint State examples are rare, but, observation tells us that most survivors are noticeably bagmarked. With clear frosty surfaces that are free of noticeable blemishes, the present specimen is among the handsomest Gem MS65 '92-CC Dollars you will see offered for sale this year. The eye appeal from the lustrous surfaces is improved further by the intense white color left by the dies. Lastly, a very sharp strike is also worthy of praise. Pop 278; 20 finer, 18 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 7214) .

1892-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck and frosty white. Boldly struck and minimally marked, with radiant luster (as struck) on both sides. A handsome example (PCGS # 7214) .

A flashy, nice and original, and thoroughly choice '92-CC. Struck with preciseness only now and then found on this date, suggesting (from the prooflike surfaces) that it may be from new dies. Elusive in bright Mint State 63 and better. Soft-edged devices and lettering throughout the centers are typical on this issue, as commonly seen; however, a small percentage of this year's production is found better, with enough convincing detail to be called above-average and this is one such coin (PCGS # 7214) .

1892-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. Scarce date in high grade. Lustrous, tarnish-free obverse and reverse and attractive for the grade with almost abrasion-free fields. Sharp strike. There is a small diagonal mark below the eye of Liberty along with some milky toning like a thin veil over the surface. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that the eagle is virtually untouched by bagmarks. As is well known, over 1 million of these were struck. But what seems apparent as well, nearly all '92-S dollars were either put into circulation or melted at the time of the Pittman Act (1918) (PCGS # 7218) .

1893 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Mostly untoned. Only 378,000 minted. Although the 1893 is not a significant rarity in Mint State grade in spite of what this mintage would lead one to suspect, the issue is fortunately not plagued by excessive bagmarks either. This choice MS63 representative is relatively smooth, decidedly satin-like for the grade. There is, however, a single tiny chattermark on the obverse on Liberty's chin. The luster is suitably fresh. We regard it as a coin that should see lively bidding among Morgan dollar collectors (PCGS # 7220) .

1893-CC Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. An important date in the Carson City mint series. An estimated survival rate of only 48,935 pieces. Lustrous and almost devoid of any color. A very pleasing example of this scarce date.

After the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints were shuttered in 1861, another Mint in the Far West began operations in 1870, this one on a dusty byway in the Nevada high country (4,800 ft elevation), Carson City. Like the two gold mints before it, Carson had a troubled history, with production gaps in 1886-88. The mint was established in Carson City to facilitate minting of silver coins from silver in the Comstock Lode, somewhat like how the San Francisco Mint was established to facilitate minting gold coins from the gold of the California gold rush. It did not take anything like a war to shut down the Carson City Mint, however; instead, an administrative decree by the second Cleveland administration downgraded Carson City to an Assay Office in 1893, a short 23 years after it had opened (PCGS # 7222) .

1893-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-50. Key date. A lightly toned example of this memorable Morgan dollar. The business strike figure of 100,000 pieces means the '93-S has the lowest mintage in the series. Moreover, it is an accepted rarity in About Uncirculated and higher grades. There are no flaws in the surface; only a few minor hairlines and one or two marks from circulation show through a magnifying glass. The borders, legends and devices display crisp detail. The cheek fortunately missed out on the usual run of nicks and scuffs one sees on most of these. The cheek is smooth, it is blemish-free. If one wants to be a stickler for accuracy, we suppose we could point the reader's attention to a single stray mark about halfway down (or up) the eagle's breast on the left side, as if he had scratched himself while pecking at a flea under his wing -- but this scarcely matters on a coin with so much attractiveness, such natural color and surface freshness (PCGS # 7224) .
